The Prids - accident in California

Cut and pasted from their Myspace bullitin....

----------------------
update on The Prids - accident in California
Body: A message to and from friends of The Prids:

Our dear friends The Prids - David, Mistina, Joey and Maile - and two of their significant others - Kristin and Chris - were in a serious accident early Sunday evening while en route to Los Angeles on tour.

A tire blew and they lost control of the van and it rolled several times. David was airlifted from the scene of the crash, he suffered a broken collar bone, broken ribs and has 6 staples in his head. He is still in the hospital. Everyone else has been released from the hospital. Chris broke his arm, and may have spinal injuries. Maile has a broken vertebra and toe and a severe cut with stitches on her knee. Joey broke ribs, Mistina suffered a concussion, and as far as I know Kristin is in similar shape. They are currently staying at a hotel in Fresno.

A special paypal account has been set up to help out and donate directly to The Prids. They need help getting home and paying their hospital bills. If you can't help out monetarily, please repost this info on your blogs, etc.

Thanks!

send money using paypal directly to "donate@theprids.com".

putting together a book

hey, some of you may know me, julie generic. i have done a zine called weird weather in the past and while going through these tribes i realized i really want to put together a book of the Old Days. i live up in ukiah and jayed (feederz) also does, we are going to collaborate on this project.

here are a few of the things it will cover:

this book will be both a requiem and a revival of ALL old school punk stories and art, focus on SF bay area. the idea is to get writing, interviews, art etc., from people, alive and dead, who made this city a mecca of demented artistry during the years that punk thrived. i expect there will be certain cross-overs too, as 'genre' lines were not so finely drawn back then.

we will not be covering rivet, industrial, or any of those current manifestations of popular underground music because...well, it covers itself and i am not a huge fan (i do listen but not with the same passion and sense of connection).

what you can do to contribute:

* ideas for the title.
* art: got old flyers, pictures, photos? collage? anything that relates to the topic.
* RIP page(s): photos, music, art of people who are gone; or just a memorandum for someone you miss.
* writing: stories from your personal experiences on the street, in the clubs, with the bands, being there and what was going on with you in general.
* who's doing what now: bands, people, pets; interviews?
* ideas for issue themes: the farm, the mabuhay, the on broadway, powell punks, skate scene (jaks of course!), the early deathrock scene.
* contact page: who you are and how to get in touch so you can perhaps connect with old friends who are NOT dead yet.
* any other ideas you might have: brainstorm with me!

the topics will be broken down into chapters like, and RIP chapter, a 'where are they now' chapter, etc. and this needs to be NON FICTION. in our case, truth is stranger than fiction.

i always knew i'd put together a book, and this is it. we will be approaching vic vale first for publishing.

Been reading some old posts and ran across the old Anti-Marilyn sentiment and wanted to explore that a bit.

I always dug him, and so did an awful lot of people in the clubs before he got his mug on MTV too much and the Columbine kids went postal. Suddenly everyone dropped him like a hot potato, but I recall people dancing like maniacs to "Beautiful People" and "Sweet Dreams" and he was spotted occasionally in those selfsame clubs.

In spite of his metalhead fanbase, I think he did some seriously ballsy work and has played the role of spooky star to the hilt. I think he lost his way artistically after "Mechanical Animals", but I think he blows almost everything that happened in the 90s out of the water. He made me feel much the same way I did when I first heard the greats back in The Day.

A decent budget and media attention doesn't nullify validity.

So what's the problem?

members of specimen are reforming and putting out a new album. (portions recorded in San Francisco) from Metropolis Records website

# Specimen return...!
In the early 80’s Goth Rock was still beginning to take root in the US. Some of the most notable purveyors of this form of music included Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Mission and Fields of the Nephilim. While many bands in the genre faded into obscurity, some remained an influential force. Specimen was one such band. By fusing punk and new wave fashion with Goth Rock music, they created one of the first hybrids in the genre - Glam Goth. Their biggest hit was the song “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” which was played relentlessly in clubs throughout the UK and US. Disbanding in 1985, their influence can still be heard today. Earlier this year, members of Specimen re-united and are currently recording a new album for Metropolis Records.

Not a rhetorical question...

I live in near-perfect isolation from the world of youngsters and all that goes on there. All I know is there were oceans of calm in this tribe for two years, and then a flurry of posts.

Are people suddenly listening to and making this music again? One of the reasons I withdrew from "scene" is that I suddenly couldn't stomach it anymore. The music sounded dreadful to me, and the scensters were nothing like my beloved cadre from the glorious 80s.

My wife just recently discovered she could get all the old videos from youtube (I kep tellin'er, "baby they got all them Siouxsie videos on thar") and has been making interesting observations about the changes in western culture since then, which led me to some realizations, also.

Color: one subtle aspect of the difference between now and then was the intervention of 90s mainstream styles which assimilated elements of goth / deathrock culture (among other things (like sanitized BDSM and etc.)); the desaturation of color (from wardrobe and artwork) was something that I identify as a goth/deathrock advent; when it went mainstream, it wasn't too long before we were all assaulted by Cat-In-The-Hats and vivid pinks and whatnot being added to the mix. A lot of us in the crucial 80s were "rebelling" against the mainstream of glitz and over-saturated colors (burgundy blazers, tacky yellow hair-bananas an' shit) by removing almost all color from ourselves and drifting around in b&w. The 90s appropriated that look and fed it back to us in a form that was characterized by immaculateness and cleanliness.

More blather later as time permits. Share your thoughts. The separation between european and american forms are something wifey is right now reminding me about, also. I'm going to go talk with her for a while. She's talking now specifically about the corset in the "Slow Dive" video. Better get while the gettin's good.....

I love image. Not that there aren't other important factors but lets face it, don't the prettier things catch your eye?I've probably done every look in the goth handbook, 1700s, distinguished gent, cowboy, Deathrock, glam, rivet head, fetish, millitary. I guesse Im going for a more wearable propaganda chic/glam goth/fetish look these days. So what freak chic do you seek?

I'm tired of going to clubs and only hear oontz with the occational top-40 goth thrown in. Goth does not have to be over 10 years old to be good...

Murder at the Registry - Filed: '93 - '03 2003 (Strobelight Records)
The Last Days of Jesus - Alien Road (Strobelight Records)
Sleeping Children - Lullabies for Debauchery 2004 (Strobelight Records)
The Ghost of Lemora - REACH FOR THE GROUND 2004 (Resurrection Records)
Uninvited Guest - Faith in Oblivion 2005 (Self/DarkcellDigital Music)
The Phantom Limbs - Random Hymns EP 2005 (Hungry Eye Records)
Sixteens - Into the Gold Wave of Future-Non-Rip-Off 2005/06 (Hungry Eye Records)

How often have you gone to a club that advertised "deathrock" and did not hear one song remotely that?

There is this club I used to love... but lately it's gone down hill and becoming the usually oontz type of format. It really saddens me. I went this last week for the first time in a few months, and a Mission and a Sisters song was just about the only thing that was remotely "deathrock" that was played that night.

I noticed that they've completly removed "deathrock" from next months flyer, but it still states it on their generic one.

Death rock at Defiance this friday july 15th, The Deep Eynde

Defiance - Friday, July 15th w/The Deep Enyde 18+ Club
Caution, 516 Front Street, Santa Cruz

This upcoming Friday marks the return of Defiance, and we have our
first live act - LA's very own, The Deep Eynde. Blending styles from
deathrock and psychobilly, to gothic rock and punk rock, to even
industrial and ethereal, The Deep Eynde bring the darker side of the
rock world to Defiance this month. Compared to such bands as The
Damned, The Lords of the New Church, The Ramones, T.S.O.L., the
Mission UK, and many, many more, they will not disappoint your inner
child. You can find out more about them at www.DeepEynde.com and by
searching Yahoo!/Google.

This month in the Black Cat Lounge we will have DJs Rick A. Mortis,
Meester, and our very own Neshamah, who will be bringing you party
music from the grave and beyond until the dead come home. Arrive
prepared for the best in post-punk, (new/dark)wave, gothic rock, and,
as usual, anything that reeks of the tomb.

In the back we will have DJs Narce, Rick A. Mortis, and Dante, with
The Deep Eynde taking the stage for a set once things get warmed up.
Come early for structured noise and heavy industrial. Show up later
for gothic and gothic'industrial music to make you dance and sway
into oblivion. Stay until late for EBM, industrial-dance, and
psytrance, with, as always, many new releases.

You can send any and all requests (including those for new
releases) to the DJs at staff@clubdefiance.com. If you have to have
that request played, bring the CD to the event and talk to the staff.

As always, open DJ tryouts are still being held at 8:00pm the day
of events, as well as by appointment - contact Dante@ClubDefiance.com
for more information.

Information about performing at Defiance can be had by contacting
Mike Creep at Creep@ClubDefiance.com (yes we always accept and listen
to demos).

Finally, sign into the web page at www.ClubDefiance.com and at
ClubDefiance.tribe.net for giveaways that range from CDs to guest
passes to drink tickets.

See you on Friday and many thanks for the continued support!
Defiance Staff,
--Narce, Mike Creep, Meester, Dante, Rick A. Mortis, and Neshamah.

Defiance July 15th with The Deep Eynde. 18+ $7 and 21+ $5. Doors
open at 9:00pm for 21+ and ~9:40pm for 18+.

Dark Sparkle's Last Hurrah At The Cafe Du Nord

True to our name, this update has news both Dark and Sparkly.

First the Dark...

This Thursday marks the end of an era as Dark Sparkle and the Cafe Du Nord part ways.
For the last 6 years the Cafe Du Nord has been our home, with other venues graciously opening their doors during scheduling conflicts, etc.
This time however there is no going back. While the Du Nord has left the door open for the odd special event here and there, we're afraid we can no longer call it home.

Like us, we're sure you have a lot of fond memories of the Cafe Du Nord and Dark Sparkle's time there and in honor of that we bring on the Sparkly news...

This Thursday we celebrate Dark Sparkle's 6 year anniversary!
Far from a wake for our dear departed Cafe Du Nord, we plan on not only celebrating our past, but looking forward to our future!
Yes, we already have our first date of year 7 lined up, so don't worry. We're still around.
Now you could wait to see the details posted on darksparkle.com after Thursday, but why not come out and get a fancy new flyer in hand and be the first to know? Come on...you know you wanna.
To sweeten the deal we have brand spanking new CD's to give away! The next in the series of limited edition Dark Sparkle CD's is printed and ready to go.
We only have 100 to give away, so be sure to come early and ask for one or you just may miss out!
We'll also have DVD's on hand to celebrate the release of INXS' "What You Need - The Video Hits Collection" and The Pretenders "Greatest Hits!"

We've heard threats of some of our favorite DJ's will be bringing their music "just in case" they get a chance to play for one last time at the Du Nord, but we'll see. They'll have to wrestle Miz Margo and Sage off the stage first!

Hope to see you there. Spread the word!

Your friends,
Sage, Miz Margo, Michael Sparkle & Niki

Thursday June 30th, 2005
Dark Sparkle
The Soundtrack To Your Tainted Life
DARK SPARKLE'S 6TH ANNIVERSARY!
CD giveaways of the limited edition Dark Sparkle CD6 and new DVD releases INXS: "What You Need - The Video Hits Collection" and The Pretenders: "Greatest Hits!"!
DJ's: Miz Margo & Sage
Host: Michael

Announcing the latest club night (Defiance) in Santa Cruz at the
newest venue in town, Club Caution on 516 Front Street. With the
best DJs in the area, two dance floors, a lounge room, two
fully-stocked bars, wonderful food (until 10:00pm,) a game room, and a smoking patio, Defiance will be a unique experience.
absolutely stunning venue. They will be accompanied by other residents in the following months.

The musical styles will range from Narce's well-rounded knowledge
music and experimental, through Meester's old-school deathrock, new
wave, and psychobilly, and, of course, Rick A. Mortis' wide range of
"absolutely no futurepop"-based darkwave-meets-gothic. Be prepared
for music you will not hear anywhere else from DJs who have pushed the bar and innovated in the Santa Cruz scene and beyond countless times.
staff@clubdefiance.com. As usual, if you have to have that request
played, bring the CD to the event and talk to Dante.

Presenting this event is Mike Creep, who will be playing an
assortment of videos in the bar all night long.
has always had, the Defiance staff is committed to bringing new and
fresh music and talent to the Santa Cruz area. We accept any and all
demos, and we will be hosting open DJ tryouts at 8:00pm the night of
every event.

The internet is a starnge place, where you can still feel the presence of people who have passed on...

So I go to "my tribe.net" and notice that their are new post in deathrock.. I click deathrock. I had always assumed that the pictures on the right had side (memebers) were ordered by who recently logged in.. I found out today that is is not the case. It showed me the picture of someone who has been dead for a little over 4 months now. Kind of creepy.

Hello my dark friends , I am new to the tribe it was nice to see that someone knew the meaning of deathrock and did not confuse it with gothic. Does anyone know what happened with Andi Sex Gang and where is he now ? I have been out of the loop for quite some time but I have recently been revived. Or should I say "It has been many moons and now it is time to revamp."

I've been trying - for YEARS - to remember what band did this song, what the name of it is - anything. i want this thing.

I can hear it in my head perfectly:

"That chair's a fake. That chair's out of place. You've got things walkin' 'round that should be put away. Masturbator. Fornicator."

Who did this? What's it called? Why can't I remember?

so when I started listening, it was about an aesthetic. a kind of slow dark, gritty guitar, rock with fishnets and eyeliner. There are a lot of bands I've heard that have the same aesthetic as sex gang. I'm wondering what indie, punk bands people ahve heard recently that remind you of back in the day.
Can't think of any off the top of my head, but will be adding to discussion.

The Blue Hour

I've come to lie beside you
I've come to know the dark for light
I've come to trust just one
and that one died with yesterday

Now that I've laid me down to sleep
for what it's worth, I dress my tears in costumes
never again will we, will I turn to stone
the drowning edges of my pillow
catch the last breath
on a desert leading down
the breath too deep, the breath too long ago forgotten
now that I've torn that chance from my eyes

Now that all honest clocks bury oceans with sand
our tears have filledthem once again
when will I, will we stand at the shore
to cleanse our soul ?
Are memories too deep,
or are memories too long ago forgotten
now that I've left that chance to die ?

So I've seen the band and got their CD. Their sound is TOTALLY Siouxsie kinda late 70's art punk. I like them but am curious how they are being received in the deathrock/goth community. They are on PrinceHouse Records which is not known for goth.

Any thoughts? Much better and true to roots than ethereal drama rock I've heard around.

Hatesex CD now available

Hey this Benn of Hatesex, formerly of Diva Destruction. Just thought I would drop a line about the new band and CD. Thanks...

Hatesex's debut CD is now available! The 4 song CD, entitled "The Spiritual Palsy EP" can be purchased through our STORE. T-shirts and other goodies are now available as well.

www.hatesex.net

As mentioned before, the CD was co-produced by Bari-Bari (MephistoWalz/ex-Christian Death) and contains a remake of The Secular's cult-hit "Hatesex (Reborn)" from which the band took their name. Also included is the band's radical version of the 1983 Slayer classic "Black Magic" which features guest vocals from Martin Ain of Swiss legends Celtic Frost. Erol
Unala, also of Celtic Frost provided additional guitars.

In anticipation of securing a record deal for a full length album, the CD will be pressed in limited quantities.

All of the songs on the CD can be previewed at:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/8/hatesexmusic.htm

Thanks,
if you drink arrogant bastard beer please consider the following info

the ceo of this company greg koch swindled and hurt the music scene in san francisco.

he used to manage a place called downtown rehearsal which was a home to about 500 bands. the building was bought and he notified the tenants that he had negotiated a new lease with the owners and would be doubling the rent to make much needed improvements.

what he neglected to state was that the new owner was his father. he never actually made any improvements in the next year and then his father sold the building for over the ten times the price he purchased it for in the real estate boom of the dot bomb.

this created a situation where over 2000 musicians were evicted from their practice spaces. many musicians were forced to leave the city for low rents. this diminished the music scene in san francisco greatly. the rehearsal space real estate has never really recovered and there are slowly forming movements of music to revitalize our city.

so not only did he double the rents but he threw out the musicians for the sake of greed.

i believe that he is still banned from many bars and clubs in san francisco.

you may read these articles if you have any concerns about the validity of these statements.

thank you for not buying this beer. thank you for taking the time to read this information.

I stumbled upon the new Indie 103.1 FM - Santa Monica and Orange County. Couldn't believe my ears! Joy Division. PIL. Sex Pistols. Cure. ("Charlotte Sometimes" on the radio! Oh my!). I thought I died and gone to radio heaven. Indie 103.1 FM is light on the talking, heavy on what's known as "adult alternative." Which, contrary to what it sounds like (high-grade porn), means really cool music. Wonder how long this station will last?

I've decided to make it public, seeing as how I'm not at the computer all day, but morons who think this community is for deathmetal/blackmetal will be deleted immediatly.

I may change it back if people don't listen, but I'm going to have faith that people are more intelligent over here.

...is going to cover these two bauhaus greats in the upcoming year:

Mask

and

God in an Alcove

...the thing is, we usually play middle eastern traditional/gawhazee music (for bellydancers) so it should be interesting. Too bad you all live elsewhere. I suppose the turqish grannies and arabic newlyweds will just have to cope.

They're usually so ridiculously polite; I imagine they'll just try hard to pretend they know what the hell is going on when we start crooning about what "the transformation is invested" with....

We've also worked out an interesting take on "Desperate Hell" by old skool C.D. (from the Deathwish album~!!! What do you MEAN you've never heard it?!?!? Look - right there, tacked on to the end of your re-released disc of "Only Theatre of Pain" are all the tracks from Deathwish. It was its own album when I was but a lad~! Notice that Rozz is so high that when they do 'Cavity', he can't quite remember the lyrics....)
