is it coming back?

Not a rhetorical question...

I live in near-perfect isolation from the world of youngsters and all that goes on there. All I know is there were oceans of calm in this tribe for two years, and then a flurry of posts.

Are people suddenly listening to and making this music again? One of the reasons I withdrew from "scene" is that I suddenly couldn't stomach it anymore. The music sounded dreadful to me, and the scensters were nothing like my beloved cadre from the glorious 80s.

My wife just recently discovered she could get all the old videos from youtube (I kep tellin'er, "baby they got all them Siouxsie videos on thar") and has been making interesting observations about the changes in western culture since then, which led me to some realizations, also.

Color: one subtle aspect of the difference between now and then was the intervention of 90s mainstream styles which assimilated elements of goth / deathrock culture (among other things (like sanitized BDSM and etc.)); the desaturation of color (from wardrobe and artwork) was something that I identify as a goth/deathrock advent; when it went mainstream, it wasn't too long before we were all assaulted by Cat-In-The-Hats and vivid pinks and whatnot being added to the mix. A lot of us in the crucial 80s were "rebelling" against the mainstream of glitz and over-saturated colors (burgundy blazers, tacky yellow hair-bananas an' shit) by removing almost all color from ourselves and drifting around in b&w. The 90s appropriated that look and fed it back to us in a form that was characterized by immaculateness and cleanliness.

More blather later as time permits. Share your thoughts. The separation between european and american forms are something wifey is right now reminding me about, also. I'm going to go talk with her for a while. She's talking now specifically about the corset in the "Slow Dive" video. Better get while the gettin's good.....

My .02, it was brought to my attention from DJ Melting Girl that there was one huge change that happened that made a definitive change in the music...

People stopped lugging around Guitars and Cabinets, and traded it for a synthesizer.

To me, Deathrock always treaded a thin line between the atmospheric European Synth-pop and guitar frenzied Punk, and once you ditch the Axe, your choices are either Trance, EBM, House, or Industrial. Keep the guitar and you tread dangerously close to what people are calling Metal now (I'm having a hard time accepting that label for bands like Disturbed, but it seems to be the norm)

In SF, Industrial became the next evolution, I have no idea what LA's choice was (where I grew up), but it seems like the scene rather dwindled down there. SF has at least carried the energy, even if the music changed.

But, as I look fondly back into the stack of vinyl, Specimen, 45 Grave, Virgin Prunes, Bauhaus, Sioxsie, the conclusion is the same....

Someone needs to pick up a goddamned Guitar again..... :)

"Someone needs to pick up a goddamned Guitar again..... :)"

Amen. Let's put the "Rock" back into Deathrock.

In my opinion, easy accessibility to keyboards and composition software and easy self-publishing made for alot of really cheap, stupid music on the market by people who fancied themselves musicians.

Is it coming back? I don't think that so much as I believe that aspects of it have slowly crept into the mainstream via the popularity of graphic novels, horror movies, etc.

The 70's & 80's was the pinnacle for deathrock and punk for that matter. Now it is all bubble gum punk and synth rock. Mostly pretty boys who have the wet look in their hair and a dog collar. Fuck them. What happened to the Echo's and Peter Murphys of the world?

What we need is a deathrock resurrection, pardon the pun. Similar to what Scissor Sisters have done for disco.

          "...deathrock resurrection..."

Hmmm, perhaps we should call it the Exhumation.... :)

              hellow

well, the things are the same in over seas (sorry for my bad english, i'm living in paris), we all listen the sames old vinyls again and again, re memorizing how it was before in the 80's, and as i'm young (just 22), i "live" that ,through remembers of my friends who are 30/40 years old
i have the impression that it's agonize ... and i'm so disappointed!
so, maybe, young people have to take example on, and Re-anime this music?

and also just to say that old musicians are not dead ^^ (remember of a Peter Murphy in February 2006 who was alive and dynamic on the scene ! >< )
so maybe have to believe? -_-

It does spur my dusty old heart that there are some younger folks discovering it. I remember being called "Baby Bat" by my older friends; now it's me being all patronizing and "remember the good days"....

Some of my closer friends are now, in fact, college-aged and slightly older people who are finding out about the Pornography album ("is this the one with 'Boys Don't Cry' on it?" "Noooooo, my sweet cherub, eet eez nawt. muahuahaaaa."), about Christian Death, about Siouxsie, &c.

I'm willing to believe, Grise! Make me believe! Put out an album!

Anyone have that SPK album - uhhh I think it was "Songs of Byzantine Cities" or some such? Lots of cello - sigh. Can't find it.

To celebrate the merest whisper of exhumation, I listen to Ulakankulot and make faces at the ceiling.

Please just someone get rid of Emo and all the Bubble Gum Punk and I will be fine. ; )
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

I think if we just ignore it for a few minutes it will actually kill itself in a dramatic fit of self-consuming ennui.

Or at least, that's my plan.
